PS Mueke Lauds Extension Workers as Backbone of Livestock Sector
The Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, Hon. Jonathan Mueke, has hailed livestock extension officers as the backbone of animal production and rural economic growth. Speaking during the graduation ceremony of 246 animal health and production students at AHITI Nyahururu in Nyandarua County, the PS emphasized the critical role extension workers play in improving animal health, upgrading breeds, and enhancing productivity across communities.
Mueke noted that livestock extension officers are instrumental in transforming the agricultural landscape by increasing milk and meat production, boosting rural incomes, and promoting modern farming practices. He commended the graduating students for choosing a career that directly supports farmers and contributes to Kenya’s food security goals.

The PS urged the graduates to prioritize service and impact over academic achievement, reminding them that their true success would be determined by the number of farmers they empower rather than the certificates they possess. “Your work in the field will be the real measure of your success,” he told the graduates.
Mueke reaffirmed the government’s commitment to livestock commercialization and improving extension services across the country. He said the ministry is working to equip officers with modern tools, technology, and training to enable them to reach more farmers efficiently.
The graduation ceremony, attended by officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and local leaders, marked a major milestone for AHITI Nyahururu in producing skilled professionals to support Kenya’s livestock value chain. The event carried the theme #Betakilimo and underscored the importance of professionalizing animal health and production services for national development.
