Ithookwe Airstrip Reconstructed to Boost Connectivity and Growth in Kitui County
By YOANA KIMWELE
The newly reconstructed Ithookwe Airstrip this morning welcomed H.E. President William Ruto, senior government officials, visitors, and delegations attending this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kitui, marking a significant milestone in Kenya’s efforts to strengthen regional air connectivity and drive economic growth. The event highlighted the government’s dedication to improving transport infrastructure and promoting equitable development across counties.
Developed by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) under the guidance of the Government of Kenya, the Ithookwe Airstrip has undergone major upgrades to meet modern aviation standards. The facility now boasts a newly paved 950-metre-long and 15-metre-wide runway, complete with a 30-metre strip for added safety. The apron, which facilitates aircraft movement and parking, has also been fully completed and clearly marked, ensuring efficient operations and improved safety for both local and visiting aircraft.
The airstrip’s redevelopment also includes critical amenities designed to enhance passenger experience and service delivery. Construction of a modern terminal building is underway, while the washrooms are already complete and operational. Work on the parking area and driveway is progressing steadily, aimed at improving accessibility for passengers, visitors, and airport service vehicles. These facilities are expected to make Ithookwe one of the most efficient and accessible airstrips in the Eastern region.
During the inspection, KAA General Manager for Marketing and Business Development, Mr. Abraham Kipruto, received and briefed the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Hon. Davis Chirchir, on the project’s milestones and the ongoing works. He reaffirmed KAA’s commitment to ensuring the airstrip meets all regulatory and operational standards before its official commissioning. Mr. Kipruto further emphasized that the project aligns with the national agenda to decentralize air transport services and bring development closer to the people.
Once fully completed, the Ithookwe Airstrip is expected to play a pivotal role in stimulating local economic growth, improving regional mobility, and unlocking opportunities in tourism, trade, and investment across Kitui County and the wider Eastern region. The facility will also enhance emergency response capabilities and open up the region to increased business and government travel.
The project underscores KAA’s ongoing commitment to supporting the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) by investing in modern infrastructure that promotes inclusive growth. The successful completion of the Ithookwe Airstrip will not only boost Kitui’s connectivity but also serve as a catalyst for transformative development that uplifts local livelihoods and positions the county as a key player in Kenya’s aviation network.
