CONTROVERSY SURROUNDS NYERI GOVERNOR MUTAHI KAHIGA OVER REMARKS ON RAILA’S DEATH

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has come under heavy criticism following remarks he made regarding the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The comments, delivered in Kikuyu during a burial ceremony, have been widely interpreted as celebratory in tone, implying that Raila’s passing was God’s way of channeling development resources to the Mt Kenya region.

The statement immediately drew outrage across the political spectrum, with many leaders condemning Kahiga for what they termed as reckless, insensitive, and divisive utterances. Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi accused the governor of fanning tribal animosity, while Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei demanded a public apology to the Odinga family, the Luo community, and the nation at large.

East African Community Principal Secretary Dr. Caroline Karugu also weighed in, describing the remarks as “silly and deeply unfortunate,” emphasizing that such rhetoric has no place in a country striving for unity during a moment of national mourning. The uproar has sparked renewed calls for restraint and respect among leaders, especially when addressing sensitive national issues.

As pressure mounts, Governor Kahiga is being urged to issue a formal apology and clarify his intent. His remarks have reignited simmering political and ethnic tensions, with Kenyans expressing concern over the resurgence of hate speech and divisive politics.
