KITUI SOUTH SUB- COUNTY MAKES HISTORY, AS ONE OF THE LEADING CHAIN STORES IN KENYA STARTS TO STOCK HONEY FROM THE REGION

Kitui South, has, this month, made history after KAMAKI farmer’s Co- operative Society Ltd. bagged a lucrative order with Mulleys Super Market for the regular supply of the now, internationally acclimated Kitui –

1 KAMAKI Honey BrandUnder the contract, Kitui- Kamaki honey will initally be available in seven (7) of Mulleys ten (10) supermarkets in Kenya.

According to Dr. Temi Mutia, the Value Chain Specialist in the office of the Governor, the move by Mulleys Super Market is a clear demonstration on how to operationalize the South Eastern Kenya Economic Block (SEKEB), with a Win Win situation, while at the same time, squarely addressing Governor Charity Kaluki Ngilu’s Agenda number five on Wealth Creation in a sustainable manner.Statistics from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, clearly shows that, Kenya consumes an average of 100,000 MTs of honey per year, of which, ONLY 25,000 MT is produced locally, with the balance being imported.

With the natural existence of both the Tsavo National Park and Kitui South National Game Reserve, in the Sub- County, each and every individual from the Sub- County should seek to proactively invest in this rare, God given opportunity to it’s fullest potential and also completely move away from charcoal burning.

On his part, Mr. Euticus Kyungu the Chairman of Kamaki Co- operative Society said that, in 2020, the Strategy is to ensure that,Kitui Kamaki honey is stocked in at least 3 of the top 5 Chain Stores in Kenya and in the region, thus, making it possible for Kenyans to consume, pure, authentic Kenyan honey, unlike is the case at the present moment, while at the same time assisting the Country to conserve the much needed foreign exchange .

The Kitui Kamaki honeyinitiative is supported by the County Government of Kitui, Dorcas Aid International and the World Bank.
