The Men for Women Champions is a programme under the Groots Kenya and covers four of the Kenya’s 47 counties namely Kitui, Laikipia, Kiambu and Nakuru. The Groots Kenya Kitui County Coordinator Jeniffer Mutinda further disclosed that currently the Groots Kenya operates in 19 counties within the country including Nairobi and Murang’a.
She was speaking during a Men for Women Champions Kitui County forum organised by the Groots Kenya in partnership with the UN Women at the Kitui Premier Resort in Kitui Town on Thursday, October 18, 2018 for some men from Kitui County where the meeting’s aim was for the local women to talk to the local men and request them to empower them for the good of the county.
Kitui West Constituency Development Fund (CDF) Chairman Wilfred Nzangi Keli was the chief guest at the function. The Groots Kenya started in 1995 and is purely for the Kenyan women. “The non-governmental organisation is funded by the Japanese Embassy in Kenya through the World Bank,” Mutinda announced. She announced that the NGO started its operations in Kitui County in 2003 with the HIV/AIDS disease being its entry point in the county. “There were many people who were bed-ridden by the scourge in the area at that time. And many of them were helped by the NGO and is still supporting them in many ways including mentorship. And we are progressing well,” she said.
Former Kitui County Governor, Dr. Julius Makau Malombe was working with the NGO and the current governor Charity Kaluki Ngilu is also working with it, Mutinda added. The coordinator said the Groots Kenya supports the women in Kenya in many ways including sponsoring various trainings for them. And on his part, Keli highly lauded the Kenyan women’s leadership and asked the local men to empower them for the good of the country.
He described the women as very important people in the society. The function was also addressed by the Groots Kenya Kitui County Chairperson Angeline Francis, Secretary Elizabeth Mulandi, Treasurer Rhodestta Muthui and several participants.
